Youth Outreach

OperationNoLimits: Help juveniles in a detention center in Lino Lakes realize the joy of gardening. Two-hour commitment which has usually been done on a Tuesday during the day, 2:30 – 4:30. Some of the projects so far have been helping with starting winter greenhouses in plastic jugs, planting seeds, and propagating and dividing plants.

Spring Gala April 24th and 25th

Help the MN State Horticulture Society at their annual fundraising event, Spring Garden Gala. We are expecting 350 guests. It will be held at The Commons in Vadnais Heights. Volunteer on either Thursday, April 24th to help set up, or the day of the event, Friday, April 25th . Some volunteer positions would include bringing plants inside, filling gift bags, setting up tables, coat checking, helping guests find their tables, and helping guests to check out by finding the items they bought. There is a lot of standing and walking involved; some lifting but you don’t need to if you can’t. Both days are usually full days, from about 8:30 – 4:30.

Splitting Perennials, Spring

Assist Mary Lou with dividing/splitting her perennial plants this spring. We’ll take these divisions, shake off their soil, put them through baths following anti-Jumping Worm procedures, and repot to use for our fundraiser plant sale. We plan to work outside in the early spring, setting up outdoor tables on the lawn. The club will purchase the soil. Mary Lou has incredibly beautiful gardens that were noteworthy of a tour last year. Just working in/near them will be a pleasure!

Shoreview Trail Clean Up, Spring and Fall

Help the City of Shoreview by cleaning up along a trail. We do it once in the spring and once in the fall. Walking for one hour is involved. The clean-up will probably happen on a weekday evening (not in the dark). The city provides the bags. Helpful to wear gardening gloves. This one has been a great group activity, especially to get to know your fellow garden club members better. We have a trail along Highway 96 that we are tending for the next year; it’s a 2-year commitment.

Tabling at the Shoreview Farmers Market, June 3 from 3-7:00

Join us with educating the public about gardening, if they have questions, or just telling them about the club. Possible emphasis could be incorporating natives/pollinators into the landscape. We might have a few plants to sell that are left over from our plant sale.

We’ll be there from 3-7:00 p.m. This could be a sitting or standing position.

Make Flower Bouquets

Make bouquets from flowers from our own gardens and deliver them to caregiving facilities in the area. Clip some flowers and fillers/greenery from our own gardens and join a small group that puts together flower bouquets. You don’t need to know anything about flower arranging since the bouquets are simple. We make about 15 every time we meet for about 1.5 hours, usually on a weekend morning, in Shoreview. It would be helpful if you could help deliver a few, too.

Past Community Service Success

Mounds View Yard & Garden Expo

Staffed table space at Mounds View Yard & Garden Expo in collaboration with Project Ardan on

March 1 from 10-2:00. Educated the public about gardens and plants. Told them about club membership. Made new friends and connections.

~BOUQUETS~ a community service project

We made 13 bouquets that were made within 1.5 hours that were delivered to five different facilities for the elderly:  Eaglecrest, Johanna Shores and its assisted living next door, Cardigan Ridge, Bel Rae and Langton Shores.  All were very grateful and really appreciated them.

Pollinator rain garden

SHOREVIEW'S FIRST POLLINATOR RAIN GARDEN

At McCullough Park in Shoreview, 27 volunteers from the Arden Hills- Shoreview Rotary Club, the Shoreview Community Garden Club and the city’s natural resources team worked in shifts to plant over 400 plants to bring the city its first pollinator rain garden.

The 2,000-square-foot garden was placed in the city to help meet Rotary International’s goals of supporting the environment through its Operation Pollination initiative. This partnership project is one of Rotary’s six focus areas in an effort to support the environment, led by the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG).
